Belonging to the pyroxenoid mineral group, rhodonite is an attractive rose red colored manganese inosilicate that often has black manganese oxide dendrite vein impurities running throughout it, providing beautiful contrast. The famous pink color is reflected in the “rhodon” part of its name, which is the Greek word for “rose.” Due to surface oxidation, however, rhodonite may also occur in variations of brown. It exhibits a triclinic crystal system, a Moh's scale hardness of 5.5-6.5, a specific gravity of 3.57-3.76, a white streak, a vitreous to pearly luster, weak pleochroism, and perfect cleavage in two directions. It is transparent to translucent. It is a minor ore of manganese and a semi-precious and ornamental stone often used in jewelry and carved. It was especially used for carving in Russia, where it was made into tiles, serving bowls, ornamental pillars and sculptures for russian aristocrats (particularly the russian czars). Today, it is relatively inexpensive to obtain and is considered to be a classic among collectors. Notable localities include Russia, Australia, Sweden, Brazil, and Massachusetts and New Jersey in the United States. Rhodonite occurs inside of manganese deposits formed through hydrothermal, sedimentary and metamorphic processes.
Rhodonite is primarily associated with the heart chakra and, secondarily, the root chakra. It represents the astrological sign of taurus. Its numerical vibration is 9. It is often referred to as a “rescue stone,” as it is said to vibrate with love, bring a sense of self worth and well being, and ward off negativity simply upon being held and gazed into. As a gemstone of balance, rhodonite can be used to effectively clear the psychic centers. It is also considered to be a stone of contrast, calming, elegance and grace. It is claimed to increase one's attention to detail, reduce anxiety, instill a desire to be of service to other people and the community, open one up to the opportunity of unconditional love, facilitate inner growth, ease anger (promote overall emotional balance), increase self confidence, attract one's soul mate, mend broken hearts, and provide both passionate love and grounding for relationships. If you or someone you know is suffering or has suffered from abuse and/or trauma in life, rhodonite could prove to be an excellent companion for you or them. Holding or keeping a specimen with you on a regular basis or, better yet, wearing it set in some form of jewelry may very well have a much needed healing effect.
In healing lore, rhodonite has been used by crystal healers in the treatment problems related to the ears and regarding hearing, inflammation of the joints, emphysema, light sensitivity, heart disorder and disease, strep throat, and issues of the pituitary gland, immune system, nervous system, and thyroid. It is also believed to help to stimulate the metabolism and support the detoxification, healing, and proper functioning of the body's organs, especially (but not limited to) the liver.
