Lepidolite, a secondary source of lithium, is a phyllosilicate mineral and a member of the mica group. It is also a significant source of rare alkali minerals caesium and rubidium. It occurs in high temperature quartz veins, granite pegmatites, greisens and granites. It was originally discovered in the eighteenth century. Notable deposits have been found in Brazil, Russia, Canada, Madagascar, Africa and the United States. Lepidolite specimens come in striking shades of purple, pink, red, yellow, gray, white and even colorless. They exhibit a monoclinic crystal system, perfect cleavage, a Moh's scale hardness of 2.5-3, a specific gravity of 2.8-2.9, a vitreous to pearly luster, a white streak, and are transparent to translucent. The name “lepidolite” comes from the Greek words meaning “scale” and “stone,” in reference to the fact that the mineral grows in scale-like plates. However, lepidolite sometimes also goes by the names of “litha mica,” “lavenderine,” “lavender stone,” “lilac stone,” and “flower sugilite.”
In the metaphysical world, lepidolite is regarded as a stone of peace, calming and balance. It is primarily related to the heart chakra, but also resonates with the third eye and crown chakras. It is associated with the planets of Jupiter and Neptune and the astrological sign of the libra. Its numerical vibration is an 8. Upon holding lepidolite, keeping it near or wearing it set in jewelry on a regular basis, countless people claim that they experience relaxing energies that promote acceptance and trust. It is said to encourage its keeper to hang onto hope in hard times, to ease difficult transitions, and to engender patience, optimism, independence and self love. Lepidolite is often used in dream work, rebirthing and dream recall. Placed near or beneath the pillow before bedtime, it may promote a restful sleep. It is a wonderful companion in meditation and prayer, promoting cosmic awareness and spiritual transcendence. On a practical level, it is sometimes kept around the workplace and home, as it is believed to bring success in career or business, lend a growing energy to agriculture and gardening, and absorb electromagnetic pollution emanating from computers in particular. Many people will tell you that lepidolite serves as a great good luck stone and posses the power to drive away negativity. When paired up with rose quartz, lepidolite's influence may allow for the reconciliation of love.
Aside from the aforementioned metaphysical benefits, lepidolite is claimed to offer a myriad of benefits in the world of physical healing. It has been used by crystal healers in the treatment of Alzheimer's, epilepsy and issues related to the glands, nerves, joints, immune system, DNA, skin, nails and hair, anxiety and stress, post-traumatic stress disorder, and manic depression. It may also provide support for those going through sleep disorders, addiction recovery, pregnancy and childbirth, and promote enzyme balance and general healing.
