Tiger eye is a golden to red-brown colored quartz group member that is usually metamorphic. It is considered to be relatively common. It exhibits a trigonal crystal system, a Moh’s scale hardness of 5.5-6, a specific gravity of 2.64-2.71 and a silky luster, and is a chatoyant stone, meaning that it has a “cat’s eye” effect. This is due to its fibrous structure. The result is an appearance akin to the sheen given off of a spool of silk. This captivating effect is best exaggerated in cabochon form, with the base of the stone running parallel to the fibrous structures within. Tiger eye is a prime example of pseudomorphous replacement of fibrous crocidolite by silica. It mainly hails from East Asia and South Africa, but it also occurs in India, Burma, Australia, Namibia, the United States, Canada, Brazil, Spain, and other locations.
In the metaphysical realm, tiger eye is regarded as a stone of protection (especially during travel), grounding and stabilization. It primarily resonates with the solar plexus chakra and is said to bring a boost to one’s personal power. Along with this, it is believed to bring practicality and the skills to correctly use this new found power, as well as willpower, self-confidence, calm, courage, creativity, integrity, kundalini awakening, and the ability to interpret situations clearly (without clouded judgment). If you could use some good fortune, you may try wearing it or keeping it near, as it is claimed to literally enhance prosperity. Under its influence, you may also notice a welcome release from anxiety, fear, and complacency, with feelings of balance and harmony taking their place. It is known to provide spiritual grounding. Traditionally, tiger eye was carried in the form of an amulet as protection against ill-wishes and curses. This stone is associated with the sun, the astrological signs of leo and capricorn and the element of fire. It vibrates to the number 4. If you plan to wear tiger eye in the form of a bracelet, you should wear it on the right wrist as opposed to the left. Wearing it on the left wrist has been known to cause overheating in some individuals.
Tiger eye is believed to possess physical healing properties, as well. Crystal healers use it to treat those suffering from bronchitis or asthma, as it is said to keep the lungs warm. Asthmatics and smokers should consider wearing tiger eye at all times to ward off potential asthma attacks and keep the lungs clean. This stone is also said to heal the throat and reproductive organs and cure insomnia, headaches and migraines. Additionally, it may prove useful in the treatment of depression and other mental illnesses, tendonitis, fatigue, hemophilia, mononucleosis and hepatitis. There have been reports of it repairing broken bones, bone fractures, and night vision, too.
