Epidote is one of the finest classic display minerals, with its lustrous, delicate, elongated and often interconnected crystals. Common, but regardless highly valued among collectors, this mineral is well represented in the best collections. It has a vitreous, pearly lustre and comes in various shades of green as well as yellow, brown, and black, with a pistachio color being typical. Its composition is a basic calcium aluminum iron silicate, and it falls between 6 and 7 on the hardness scale and 3.3 and 3.6 for specific gravity. It displays a monoclinic crystal system and ranges from transparent to almost opaque in appearance. A few noteworthy epidote localities include the Austrian Alps, Pakistan, Balochistan, Iran, and China. The most productive locality in the US is in Alaska, on Prince of Wales Island.
Epidote is associated with the astrological signs of gemini and virgo. It is said to promote spiritual growth and perception of and interaction with spiritual beings.
