Labradorite is a feldspar mineral that may be clear, white, gray, blue, green, yellow or brown and occurs in lath to blocky shaped grains in mafic igneous rocks, including gabbro, basalt and anorthosites. It can also be found in some sediments as a detrital component and in metamorphic amphibolites. Deposits exist in Canada, Norway, and a variety of other locations around the world. Labradorite exhibits a triclinic crystal system, three directions of cleavage, a Moh's scale hardness of 6-6.5, a specific gravity of 2.68-2.72, a vitreous to pearly luster, and a white streak, and is translucent to transparent. It also commonly displays twinning and “labradorescence,” or “schiller effect” (iridescence). Types of labradorite that display a high degree of this labradorescence are referred to as “spectrolite.” This crystal was first discovered in 1770 by Moravian missionaries in Labrador, Canada, for which it was named. However, it was referenced and known to be in use by Inuit tribes and the Boethuk people of Labrador and Newfoundland prior to this.
In the metaphysical world, labradorite is perhaps most often considered to be a stone of magic. The Inuit people claim that it originates from the frozen fire of the aurora borealis. Holding, carrying, or wearing it on a daily basis is said to unlock abilities of telepathy, clairvoyance, coincidence control and prophecy. It is also claimed to aid in communication with higher spirits and guides and assist with accessing of the Akashic Records, past life recall and psychic readings. It may temper the negative aspects of its keeper's personality (and therefore reduce shame and depression), discourage reckless, impulsive and anti-social behavior, and help to detoxify the effects of alcohol, tobacco, and hard drugs (to a lesser degree). Some keep it around the workplace, as it is said to bring out the best in all people and promote a more congenial workplace atmosphere in general. It is believed to encourage full attention, courtesy, and a desire in even temporary and part time staff to become fully invested in a company.
Aside from its metaphysical benefits, labradorite is believed to provide a range of benefits in the world of physical healing. It has been used by crystal healers in the treatment of eye and brain disorders and to stimulate the mental faculties, reduce anxiety and stress, lower the blood pressure, reduce the body's sensitivity to cold, alleviate gout and rheumatism, and more. It is said to have an overall healing effect on the lungs and assist those who struggle with respiratory issues, colds and bronchitis. It may also aid in metabolism, digestion and regulation and have a soothing effect during menstruation. It is valued for its alleged ability to provide pain relief. Labradorite is also believed to develop the sensitivity of the hands, making it a useful tool for those who use the power of touch to heal, such as in the case of physiotherapists.
