Moss agate, sometimes also referred to as “mocha stone,” “gardener's stone,” or “birthing crystal,” is made from silicon dioxide and is a semi-precious gemstone. It is included in the agate family even though it is not banded. Agate belongs to the quartz family and is a type of chalcedony. This crystal exhibits a trigonal crystal system and a hardness of 6 to 7. It gets its name from its dendritic inclusions (on a milky white or clear background) of iron or manganese that grow in patterns that resemble lichen or moss. The crystals may also be dark green with blue inclusions and/or contain spots of red. Moss agate has been regarded as the crystal of agriculture and gardeners in all cultures throughout history. It can be found in many locations and is most often formed from volcanic rock that has become weathered.
Moss agate is associated with the heart chakra, the element and planet of Earth, and the zodiac sign Virgo. Tribal priests of the past considered it to be a stone of tremendous healing power. It also served as a talisman to increase the strength of warriors and their likelihood of victory in battle. This stone has a strengthening and stabilizing effect, as agates vibrate at a slower frequency and have a lower intensity. It is said to be a wonderful tool for balancing physical, emotional and intellectual energies, and for harmonizing the positive and negative forces Yin and Yang. If you have a garden, you might consider keeping some of this crystal among it, as it is claimed to ensure a full crop. Additionally, keeping it on your person may bring prosperity, success and overall abundance. Upon wearing it, you may notice higher self esteem, self confidence, inner peace, and a greater ability to manage extreme levels of responsibility. Agates in general are believed to be protective stones and are said to help addicts cope with addiction. Since moss agate resonates with the heart chakra, it may have the ability to increase one's friendships and compatability with others. This is especially true if the crystal is worn on a pendant over the heart.
In addition to the metaphysical world, moss agate offers many benefits to the world of physical healing. It is believed to have a positive effect on the brain in that it may increase neuronal activity, correct imbalance between the hemispheres (and therefore treat depression) and improve perception, concentration and analytical abilities. Its influence appears to give a boost to the immune system, treating swelling and infections, fever, flu and colds, dehydration and hypoglycemia. It is sometimes made into an elixir and applied topically to address irritations and infections of the skin. Moss agate has also proven helpful to the digestive and circulatory systems when used in the treatment of toxins, gastritis, irregular heartbeat, weak cardiac muscle, and buzzing in the ears. Finally, agate is claimed to guard against sleepwalking and reduce symptoms related to epilepsy.
