Sunstone, Oregon's official gemstone and a member of the feldspar group, gives off a breathtaking spangled appearance when it is viewed from particular directions. This famous optical effect (called “shiller”) is due to reflection off of minute scale inclusions of red copper, giving it an appearance akin to aventurine and, in fact, earning it the alternate name of “aventurine-feldspar.” Sunstone comes in clear, red, green, blue, and yellow colorations and exhibits a triclinic crystal system and a density of 2.64 to 2.66. It is transparent to translucent. Besides the United States, it has also been found in Southern Norway. It has only recently become common.
Sunstone is associated primarily with the root chakra and, secondarily, with the sacral and solar plexus chakras. It respresents the astrological signs of leo and libra. Its numerical vibration is 1. In the metaphysical world, sunstone is considered to be a vessel that contains the energy of the sun god Ra, and is thus regarded as a stone that reflects the qualities of light: warmth, benevolence, openness, mental clarity, strength, and goodwill. Wearing sunstone or keeping it with you on a regular basis is believed to promote joy and leadership qualities. Under its influence, you may experience greater enjoyment of life, a sense of abundance and appreciation, nurturing of self, a desire to be of service to other people and the community, and feelings of expanded consciousness, freedom, and personal power. If you are emotionally dependent on others, have suffered a loss, struggle with phobias, or are feeling drained by others who require too much of your resources, it may help to alleviate stress and fearfulness. It is said that wearing sunstone in a ring on your receptive hand can bring to you what is desired or needed, whereas wearing it on your transmitting hand will channel blessings and healings to others. Wearing it as a pendant is believed to align the heart's wisdom with the mind's inspirations. On a practical level, you may consider keeping a specimen of sunstone with you as a good luck charm (particularly in competitions) or if you participate in a fitness program, as it is said to reveal talents, attract fame and prosperity, and increase vitality, enthusiasm and endurance. In the workplace, sunstone has been known to improve profile and bring opportunities that may lead to promotion.
In the world of physical healing, sunstone has been used to soothe and treat stomach ulcers and tension, chronic sore throat, depression, rheumatism, cartilage pains, fever, cramps, osteoarthritis, athletic injury, various infections, general pain and ache, and more. Some people choose to keep a specimen of sunstone on their person or wear it set in some form of jewelry because it is also said to warm the body and facilitate self healing. This would result in a boost to the metabolism, bodily processes and vitality and promote proper regulation and harmonization of the organs.
