Sodalite is a sodium aluminum silicate with chlorine and sometimes sulfur. It is named for its sodium content. It was discovered in West Greenland in the Ilimaussaq intrusive complex, in 1811. However, it wasn't really fully appreciated until 1891, though, when large amounts of it were discovered in Canada and it became an important ornamental gemstone. It is most well known for its bright, royal blue version, but it also comes in purple, gray, green, white, pink and colorless. It usually contains white streaks, veins or patches. It can also be multicolored. It exhibits a hardness of 5.5-6 on the Mohs scale, a specific gravity of 2.2-2.3, a transparent to opaque transparency and an isometric crystal system. Its lustre is dull or vitreous to greasy, and it has an uneven fracture and a brittle tenacity. Its dodecahedral crystals are usually large, grainy and nodular with terminations that are rounded or complex. Fine grades are scarce, but sodalite can be found in Afghanistan, Brazil, Italy, Greenland, Canada, and the US in a range of environments, including metamorphosed marbles and skarns, alkaline nepheline syenite pegmatites, and igneous rock (both intrusive and extrusive). Sodalite is valuable to collectors in polished or slab form, but it is also commonly made into beads. The sulfur-rich Hackmanite variety (and especially the rare crystallized form) is particularly popular, with its strong fluorescence and beautiful purple or pink color. After it is exposed to ultraviolet light, Hackmanite's colors appear more saturated for a limited amount of time, and then fade back down. This neat optical property is called tenebrescence.
Sodalite is associated with the throat and third eye chakras, the zodiac sign of Sagittarius, the moon, and the elements of air and water. It is said to soothe and calm the mind, facilitating rational thought and mental clarity, and opening the mind up so that new information can easily be taken in and processed. Wearers claim that it increases self-esteem and self-acceptance and can bring joy to those who are depressed. It is believed to promote harmony between group members working together on a team project by facilitating an environment of trust and solidarity. Putting Sodalite in a room in your home or in any other building may assist in clearing electromagnetic pollution. Additionally, it may aid in the understanding of deep philosophical principles and in understanding the nature of truth (why you are in the situation you are in and how you got to be in that situation), and stimulate intuition, clairvoyant abilities, self-discipline and idealism. The life that you will lead with the assistance of Sodalite could be considered to be more authentic.
Physically, some people attest that Sodalite can calm panic attacks, give the immune system a boost, help to balance the metabolism, lower blood pressure, reduce fever, relieve insomnia, and soothe a sore throat. It is also believed to help in cases of calcium deficiency and aid in the treatment of digestive disorders and disorders of the vocal cords and larynx.
