“Bloodstone,” another name for the ancient mineral “heliotrope” along with “Sun Stone” and “Christ's Stone,” is the traditional birth stone for the month of March and is a type of chalcedony. It is historically regarded for its healing aspects (both metaphysical and physical). Classic bloodstone is a deep green colored chalcedony with inclusions of red jasper or iron oxide, which resemble drops of blood (hence the name). Sometimes, the inclusions are yellow rather than red, and in this case the mineral is referred to as “plasma.” One legend surrounding this mineral says that when Christ was crucified, his blood dripped onto the green earth and transformed it into stone. Bloodstone can be found in the United States, Australia, Brazil, China, Madagascar, Germany and Scotland, but primarily comes from India. It exhibits a hexagonal crystal system, a hardness of 7 on the Moh's scale, a specific gravity of 2.63-2.65, a vitreous luster and an opaque transparency. It is usually cut into beads and cabochons for necklaces, bracelets and rings, but sometimes cut into other facets as well. It is also carved and made into figures, on occasion.
